"Kerepakupai Meru" (Angel Falls)
"On many occasions I have asked to official authority the recognition of Lt. Navy Ernesto Sanchez as the true discoverer of Angel Falls , who in 1910 was the first explorer to saw the wonder and included it in a sketch of the region. This was witnessed in 1955 by the Count Antonio Cattaneo Quirin, who served as General Inspector of the eastern and southern borders of the State of Bolivar with British Guiana and Brazil, position holded from 1914 to 1921.
He conducted a comprehensive review of the border, evicting illegal foreign colonies installed in the Gran Sabana, and participating later with Lucas Fernández-Peña in the founding of Santa Elena de Uairen, in 1927, and who said having seen the map of Sanchez La Cruz in the House Blohm Ciudad Bolivar. But Jimmy Angel had access to international news and his role prevailed.
¿How he found the Falls?
According to author Peter Paredes, Sanchez La Cruz had been given the task of determining the boundaries of the area of Canaima. Touring the area, Sanchez La Cruz is then separated from the issue, with a view to seeking diamonds, which allowed him to contact with the aboriginal peoples called Pemón, who alert him to the existence of the huge drop water. These indigenous led Sanchez La Cruz to the site where was located the jump they called "Meru Kerepakupai" which in their language means "jump the deepest place". Returning this expedition to Ciudad Bolivar, Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz gave out these important records and a sketch to a German citizen, surnamed Kuhn, Blohm homeowner, who then proceeded to keep it in a safe property.
Sanchez La Cruz just reported his discovery to few friends and journalists in Ciudad Bolivar, and never bothered to raise awareness of this historic find, until, much later, Mr. Cattaneo Quentin, in 1955, he requested information on this area explored the German Kuhn, which gave the sketch drawn by Sanchez La Cruz.
